May I repeat a question - does anyone know how to backup the user
dictionaries in OO 3?

If you are speaking bout the preinstalled ones: there is no need for it
since you can simply reinstall them.

And for downloaded ones: you should already backup up the downloaded oxt
file.

What happens to all the words you add? How do you back those up? Or can't you add words in OOo 3.x?

On OO.o 3 you right click the word the word that is underlined as misspelled and add it to standard.dic, same as on OO.o 2. standard.dic is stored in your profile and is not replaced when you update OO.o. It's location (on a Mac - location varies according to OS): /User/username/Library/Application Support/OpenOffice.org/3/user/wordbook/standard.dic
