For Win XPO users:

I went through all this too - I like to use several user dictionaries for
just the purposes you say - special names, company names, a specialist
technical dictionary, and so forth (I have one for foreign phrases and Latin
phrases too).

Backing them up in case of crashes or to transfer all that work onwards
involved finding the stored files under something like "program
files/OO/users/wordbook" in version 2.

It proved impossible in version 3 to find the user/directory etc in Windows
at least. But I was advised they are under the "documents and settings"
folder in Windows XP

The path is C:\Documents and Settings\YourName\Application
Data\OpenOffice.org\3\user\wordbook

They can be copied and replaced as far as I know though I am not sure if OO
will recognise inserted replacements - I tried adding in a new one from
outside and it did not show in the OO list of user dictionaries.

There is also a macro for copying dictionary files to a text file outside
and then importing that back in. It works a bit oddly too in that it is
supposed to copy to a plain text file as a list. But if you open the dic
files in the path above it is not a simple text representation but has
various odd symbols and all this gets copied over too.

I am still not sure if this is the answer because of these peculiarities.
There is something happening with the files that is unexplained and which
may affect how well the back-up works.

I would love to hear a better explanation - maybe from the developers who
would know what is going on.

PS Here is part of the answers I got when I started a similar discussion
a while ago

... you may also try out ->

OOo Dictionary Importer/Exporter -
Import/Export Text File into/from OOo Dictionary
Author: Russ Phillips

<quote>
This macro has a GUI that makes it simple to import words from a text file
into an OOo dictionary, or to export an OOo dictionary to a text file for
easier editing.

Latest release: Version 1.1 (June 21, 2004)
<http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=87718&package_id=1146

Please set 'Macro Security' to 'Medium' before starting the macro -> Tools
| Options | OpenOffice.org | Security  -> Macro security  ->  >Macro
Security ...<  -> [X] Medium

I am unsure if the version 1.1 macro fully copes with version 3. It seems to
run.

I hope that helps further.

Well, then it is the usual case of confusing to completely unrelated
topics, which are:
- dictionaries pre-installed and/or downloadable
and
- the user-dictionaries which can be editetd by the user via the UI

The 'standard' dictionary is one of the latter and thus what I have said
does not apply to it!
User dictionaries (the writable ones!) are locate in the user-layer of
the installation in the user/wordbook sub-directory. You can make
backups of those by simply copying them.
