DirectX is aimed as a competitor to OpenGL, so it follows that claims to
 do about the same thing, except with that it would still be catching up
in function and ahead in lockin to Windows.

You've worked at Sun long enough to know that.

Which in effect rewarded the maker of Windows for defective drivers in
OpenGL and questionable whether it is a net gain.  There are many, many
problems inherent in the OpenGL copy, DirectX, not the least of which
are the hurt brought to Sun by deviating from graphics standards.
