Uninstalling Open Office will not uninstall MS Office products. Perhaps when
Open Office was installed the option to make it the default program for
opening MS Office files was selected? In that case with Open Office gone the
computer doesn't know what program to use to open MS Office files.

There are probably many ways to correct this. One I can think of would be to
run a repair on your MS Office installation. That should restore the default
file associations between MS Office documents and the MS Office programs.
