Derek,

On installation Open Office asks whether it should be set as the default
program for opening MS Office documents. If you reply "no" then
double-clicking on a MS Office file will continue to launch the
corresponding MS Office program and load the file there. I believe this is
the setting you want.

Even after making this selection it will still be possible to open MS Office
files in the equivalent OOo program. To do so open the desired program then
use the file open command to select the MS Office file you wish to open.

Regarding compatibility, OOo isn't compatible with the latest document types
created by the current version of MS Office, Office 2007. However it is
compatible with documents from earlier versions of MS Office.
