Hmm. I tried to download the 880KB docx file to which Gary provides a link above, but my experience was not quite as happy as his : not only was I unable to open the file - OpenOffice 2.3 got stuck on a seemingly endless «waiting for external application» - but neither could I close the programme. I was forced to shut my AMD Athlon 64 X2 machine manually, and when I rebooted to Gutsy, I found that I couldn't open my Swiftweasel 2.0.0.11 browser. I was, however, able to open Firefox 2.0.0.11 and tried to download the file again, with the same results - OOo 2.3 hung, but fortunately without totalling Firefox. To get Swiftweasel to work, I had to re-install the deb package. Perhaps I'll just have to listen to Matthias Bauer's suggestion and wait for OO.o 2.4, which, it is said, should be released in April, before trying to open a docx file - if Winter comes, can Spring be far behind ?...
