which also gives the ability then for the dictionary publisher to automate distribution of updates to the files

This thought presumes that there is a "dictionary publisher", i.e. somebody with the inclination and time to maintain dictionaries. The scientific ones that i've seen were just knocked together to accomplish a job and then released as is. I well imagine these people don't want to, and shouldn't have to, maintain or 'publish' dictionaries. They've done their job and given us the dictionary. Anybody who insists the dictionary format change to accomplish their own goals then bears the burden of doing the conversion themselves [or, as Michael Adams said, provide a fully automated tool to do the conversion].

I understand your point - and I need to add that I;m jut going off of what I see inside the dictionary oxt files...no inside information on my part...but if it is as it appears then creating the "loader" is going to be a really simple process. For example the extension BasicAddonBuilder.oxt is a basic addon that allows you to package a starBasic library as an extension, along with ( if you want ) custom menus, toolbars and the like, with hardly anything more then a few point-n-click steps. Assuming dictionaries are really going to need to be packaged as oxt files I would be hard pressed to not believe that someone will put out the same type of tool in short order - it should be even easier to build actually.

But - CAVEAT - I don't know really, I opened my mouth though, so I suppose I should try and see what I can find out about it...
