Is that file actually in .DOC format or Works format? Most versions of OpenOffice can't open Works documents. Also, it has to be actually saved as a Word format and not simply renamed to .DOC. If the file is in Word format, then it might be a file association issue. During OpenOffice installation, you were given the option of making it the default application for Microsoft Office files. It appears you might have done that for Excel, but not Word documents. If so, it's a simple matter to change the file association, using the instructions below. As for the attachments, simply click on File > Send > E-mail as Microsoft Word.

Right click on file icon
Select Open With > Choose Program...
Check "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file" and choose the desired application.
