My first experience of using Open Office has been disappointing. I downloaded
and installed it successfully with the aim of using it initially to read a .mdb
file created on my home computer in MS Access and brought to My French laptop
via a memory stick. Having attempted to open the file in Open Office, I get
gibberish. Am I doing something wrong? I have mislaid the Office 2000
Professional CD, so cannot install Access on my laptop. Help!

What you are seeing is that the use of Access files is not as simple or
complete as for the other MS Office files, which are simply opened to
use them. From the Base application, you can connect to your Access
database and use its tables, but the other objects (queries, forms,
reports) are not available. They have to be recreated under Base. I hope
this will be acceptable for you. If not, there may be other applications
that can use Access files more directly. A Google search for ".mdb free"
turned up some possibilities, there are almost certainly others.
Good luck, and if you decide to use Base, you can always get help on
this list. You may miss some answers, though, unless you subscribe, by
sending a blank e-mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] and confirming
through the e-mail you receive in return. Note that this is a
high-volume list; there is also a forum for Base available through the
openoffice.org website, if you'd prefer that.
