Documents" It goes there, but when I want to open it the usual Open Office icon is
not there. In it's place is a different icon, and when I click on it a box come up that

It sounds when saving your documents, you're no longer including the
file extension. When you use Save as, ensure automatic file name
extensions is selected. You can rename those existing files, to add the
appropriate extension.
