Marius,
You have a lean condition in the pilot circiut of the carbs. This is normal
to all Max's because of emission standards from the EPA. Yamaha sends them
out lean. You will have to increase the pilot jet size one step if you have
the stock needles. Moving the air mixture screws will not be enough. You need
to disassemble the carbs and remove the metering block to do this. The stock
size is 40 you will need 42.5. they go up or down in increments of 2.5. There
is a air bleed jet in the top of the air horn on the carb which will increse
the fuel mixture to fine tune it after the jet change. A V-Max manuel from
Yamaha will show you the locations and how to change them. All the jets are
special for that carb. The carbs were a joint effort with Mikuni and Yamaha.
Yamaha wants a nice chunk for the jets to. The only one I have ever found
that has jets for less money is Wheel smith racing in San Rafael California.
There area code is (415) 555-1212 for info. I dont have there number handy.
If you run Factory needles which are thinner, You will need to go down 1 to 2
jet sizes. Good luck
