Sam,
If you ran too rich with shims under the needles then I would avoid
the factory needles as well. While the slides will pop fully open when
going WOT ... it is only for an instant ... and then depend on air
velocity to determine how far they will actually remain open.

I think Paul has a modified "Factory" CV tuning guide on the list web
site, (it is also on the "Factory" web site with other fuel / ignition
advance articles etc ), and it does a pretty good job of explaining
this ... (great reference material) ....

Check out the sections in that guide :
- Top end (full throttle / 7.5k to redline - Best Main Jet Selection
- Midrange (full throttle /5k-7k) - Select best needle clip position

Intake restriction is the biggie ... I don't think Jerry is runny a
"Y" on his airbox at all ... and you have to get more air in there ...
so that you can add more fuel to burn it up ...
