Calling all carburetor gurus! I'm having problems getting my TourMaster
running right:
It has titanium needles with C-clips (don't know the
brand/model--whatever PCW uses), and .157 main jets.
If I put the C-clip in the second slot, it runs fine in the low range,
but very lean at cruising speed and deceleration.
If I move the C-clip to the third slot, it's much happier at cruise and
decel, but chokes and stumbles when easing away from a stop. I tried
turning the idle adjustment screws in, but even at only 3/4 turn out
from fully closed, it still stumbles. It's evident that the needle
position has some effect on the low range.
If I put it in the second slot and add a shim washer, I get a compromise
of the two above: stumbles a little off idle, and pops a little at
cruise.
The carbs are properly synched, and the idle circuits have been blown
out. It idles fine.
Questions:
- I have a set of .160 main jets; if I install them, might it help to
richen up the midrange, as well as the full-open? It accelerates fine
at wide-open throttle, no popping or hint of problems, pulls good up to
redline.
- I'm buying a set of needles and jets from Tyler Pennock, in hopes of
finding needles with a steeper taper, since it seems like a steeper
taper would solve both problems: i.e., let me adjust the needles for a
smooth start at low range, yet richen up the midrange. Any thoughts on
this?
- How about tweaking some of the other jets/adjustments in the
carburetor? I'm not very mechanical, but have a service manual and am
willing to tackle a moderately difficult job.
Any help much appreciated!
