Darrin,
I doubt you burnt up the starter ... (assuming the bike will still
crank ... if not then I missed the whole point on your post ... once
the battery gets weak though you will just get clicks of course ... ).

When you do try to re-start you should limit your cranking blasts to
5-7 seconds and then wait 15-30 seconds or more ... the starter heats
up very fast ... and I actually did seize one on another bike one time
.... (the bike just refused to crank anymore at all .. but after
letting it sit about 20 min it started just fine ... so I can only
assume it really did seize in the housing due to the heat ... it
apparently did not hurt it though as it still works fine today ..).

Once your plugs get wet .. it can get very tricky to start in cold
weather because that excess fuel doesn't evaporate very fast ... If
you don't get better results this morning ... I would highly recommend
pulling the plugs and see what they look like ... It wouldn't hurt to
help them dry out either .......

You can also get a backfire through the carbs if you have a "lean"
mixture as it will fire prematurely but I don't think this is your
problem ...
