Subject: OT- PDF archiving files

Sorry- this is a bit OT :( , but for those interested in scanning
and archiving documents, who are unable to spend the $300 that Adobe
charges for Acrobat, I finally figured out a freeware way to scan documents
and convert them to pdf format.

The only thing I have not been able to figure out is how to merge
many pages into one (but that will come). The basis for this is at
http://www.myhotcity.com/zipguy/freepdf.htm - afaik, it only works on
Wintel systems, and it works as a print redirector (i.e.- you set up a
"dummy" printer, and print to it, the output becomes a pdf file).

You can see a sample of the output at
http://www.bryantrv.com/docs/659/65903.pdf .
Now- back to Airstreams!

Subject: F350 Xmission Problems

Several on the list wanted to know the outcome of my trip to the Ford dealer
in ref. to my transmission overheating.

Well it turned out better than I had expected. The tech. took it in and
looked it over and advised the fluid was alittle burned and had a slight
slip in reverse. He did nothing further till he read all the TSB's
(Technical Service Bulletins) on my unit. Again, I have a 99 F350 Ford Power
Stroke 4WD CrewCab.

After some time, I was called back by the service manager and she explained
there were several TSB's in ref. to my problem. She advised several repairs
had to be made and the parts needed to be ordered. She stated I needed a new
larger radiator, larger transmission lines, new cooler ( she was not sure if
the new cooler is bigger) and various other items that involved the
transmission.

The service manager advised all the repairs would be made under warranty, no
charge.

Boy am I a happy fellow,

Terry Jones

Todd, the knobs are the same type that are or were used on some old radio
and TVs. You might try checking with some local TV repair shops which
usually have a bunch of old junker TVs around. You might be able to
cannibalize some knobs that way. A second possibility would be to search on
Ebay under antique radios. People collect those things.

I'll let you know if I find anything.

Jim,
I am also looking for these knobs. Andy at InlandRV.com told me that they
are no longer available (he is an airstream guru)....I get the feeling that
I am searching in vain. The other option might be to replace the switch
completely with a newer type....let me know if you find any information.

Hello, Cliff ...

Thanks for the reply. I may wind up buying a complete fixture to get the
part I need. What would you need to get for the one you have?

When using RV antifreeze, unless you have pumped it through the toilet
valve, there is no value to putting it in the bowl. If you do it will
not harm the seal. Automotive antifreeze on the other hand can harm both
the toilet and the tank valves.

"Pink" is the Propalene Glycol, potable, antifreeze. You should
never allow the auto antifreeze - Ethylene Glycol - nearer to your trailer
than your tow vehicle's radiator. It's deadly. Does your owner's manual
say not to use the pink stuff? If so, then I'm probably in trouble; do as
your manual says.

Or, if you have a Macintosh that will run OS X, the system software will let
you save most files in .pdf format. I've tested it, and it works like a
charm--you can open the resulting file in Acrobat Reader. This creates an
imaged file, so there is no text editing or searching capability, but it's
better than nothing, and it's free once you've purchased the OS upgrade (or
comes free with any new Mac sold these days).

Subject: Rewiring

I just finished rewiring my 67' GT to replace the aluminum wires. So I can
only tell you from my experience with that model year. It would have been
physically impossible to rewire without the removal of the interior
(cabinets, furniture, interior panels and most of the insulation) The wires
run through plastic grommets that are affixed to the frames and horizontal
members. Also there were 3 junctions made inside the walls. Getting to the
wires was the most time consuming part of the project. I marked each old
wire at both ends with an ink pen identifying it's location i.e. (receptacle
/ switch / junction) and so on. Then removed one wire at a time using the
old wire for a length gauge and then rerouted the new wire marking each end
identifying it's purpose (receptacle / switch and so on). It was labor
intensive but I had everything out as I replaced the plywood floor. If you
decide to take on that project I would advise taking pictures and detailed
notes to aid in reassembly. You could hire an electrician to inspect your
work and maybe make the connections for you. I want to emphasize that there
are many parts to deal with and a sequence to reassembly. Best of luck if
you decide to go for it. Dave H.

I just called Ace Fogdall in Iowa. They've been in business for many many years!
Ask for Florence in parts. Part # 500063 is $12.04 each. Thay have them!

I don't remember paying quite that much, but call around to your local AS dealers!

Hope this helps...

PS You're on your own for the switch knobs, that's a different story!

Just a note on how to avoid any redundant script, when you send e-mail in
HTML format it makes it hard to read. If you are using Microsoft "Outlook
Express" just click on "Tools" and then "Options" and then "Send" and then
click on the "Plain Text" circle (radio button). It will make things work a
lot better. Dave H.
