Jon- I also have the same transmission E40D (Auto), I believe, in my '95 F150,
and have had no problems with it. Currently, I am at about 68k with it. Changed
the fluid earlier this year. I tow my '64 Safari about twice a year. It is the
towing package on a supercab 4x4. I chose the 302 engine, which is fine for the
99% of the time I am not towing. I could use more power in the mountains
uphill, but hey- I used to have a VW bus, and that taught me to take my time.
First time in a long time I have lived with 8 cylinders.
I do actively shift the transmission while going Up and down. If the engine
seems to lug, I will downshift, getting higher RPMs & HP, and maintaining
better speed. But generally do not tow in OD. I will sometimes IF I am on a
long gradual downgrade, where I am helped by gravity. If it begins to want to
change between 3rd & OD, I will manually lock it out and keep it in 3rd. Any
more of a downgrade I will downshift to help hold me back and save the brakes.
Since it's usually in the Mountains, this is the best time for the driver (me)
to enjoy the scenery, too. For the most of the time I tow in 3rd, my mileage
averages out to about 10 mpg. Even with the dual tanks, It gives me a good
range. When not towing, it's more like 17 mpg, with a 400 mile range.
So, not everybody is having transmission problems (knock on wood). I have read
other reviews of this transmission that consider it very reliable.
When I bought , the stated towing capacity for the manual trans was about half
of what the auto could pull. I would rather have a manual with a higher degree
of control for mtn driving, but have gotten used to the auto.

The stealing of the Bambi is a sad affair. Unfortunately you learn of
the theft of the smaller trailers from time to time and I suspect a lot
more are stolen then we know of. I have had some concern for my 16', 56
model unit and searched for a tire/wheel lock to fortify the lock systems
I have in sue that may be of helpful but are still not enough for the
small trailers that can be easily chained onto a tow vehicle of about
any size. As a result I found a tire lock system called the "Pit Bull"
which meets my needs. It is pricey but when you consider its cost
amortized over a few years it is very low cost insurance.

For those who want to identify themselves on their trailers it is very
easy to do with vinly decal lettering that can be made at most
computerized sign shops. Put them on your back window and you don't have
to worry about "shadow" marking your alumininum. If you ego needs it put
the signeage on every window.

I agree Roy, I have thought about someone stealing our old Silver Salley
ever since we purchased it and in fact have left it in many, many places
where I suspected it could happen. I have always taken the equalizer hitch
off the suburban and locked it in the trailer hitch, with the hope that
would slow them down some, though all they would have to do is cut the lock
on the hitch and be off with her. Your wheel lock sounds like the answer.

I'm with you, Jon. Pulling with a stick is the way to go, especially with
the right rear end and a heavy duty clutch--and the basic skill to slip the
clutch as little as possible and keep the revs down when you do. To me,
driving a heavy trailer with a stick is less work than with an automatic, as
you don't have to worry about overheating, shifting manually anyway to avoid
TC stall, trying to figure out exactly where the kickdown switch is so
you're not downshifting when you don't want to, etc. Not to mention better
mileage and performance.

At 30 feet plus, and a loaded weight likely to exceed 7,000 pounds - - a
Durango or Mountaineer would be struggling with the weight not to mention
the length. While either may have a tow capacity nearing the loaded weight
of a Sovereign, towing at the maximum load limit for a tow vehicle results
in (sometimes) greatly diminished performance and (often) much higher
maintenance costs (IMHO). In addition, when there is a significant
disparity between the weight of the trailer and the tow vehicle, the trailer
will tend to command the tow vehcile creating a very uneasy driving
experience for the driver where there is a near constant need for direction
correction and any side wind (natural or from passing semis) becomes
amplified as the tow vehicle and trailer "fight for control" - - I had an
accident with my first trailer (a Nomad) where the trailer outweighed my tow
vehicle by nearly 50% and the wind from a passing semi caused the trailer to
overpower the tow vehicle (even with dual friction sway bars) causing
trailer and tow vehicle to perform a 180 degree turn in the middle of a
state highway - - fortunately my speed was under 40 MPH and there was
minimal damage to the tow vehicle but the stress damaged the frame of the
trailer. My Overlander is 26 ft. 8 in. <and weighs 6,000 pounds loaded for
a vacation>, and I wouldn't consider anything less than a 3/4 ton SUV or
pickup derived vehicle for towing - - I tried the 1/2 ton route and
experienced poorer fuel economy, dangerous lack of power on montain grades,
and excessive maintenance expenses (the truck had a 6,800 pound traker tow
rating and was a special order vehicle purchased new).

> IDEAS, WE WOULD APPRECIATE IT.

My suggestion would be to contact a dealer and obtain the Maximum Vehicle
Weight Rating for your Sovereign. Use this figure when shopping for an
appropriately rated tow vehicle. I suspect that the maximum weight rating
for your Sovereign may approach 8,000 pounds. The rule of thumb that I
followed when I purchased my current tow vehicle was to take my maximum
loaded weight for the trailer and multiply it by a factor of 1.5 to obtain
my target tow rating for vehicles that I was considering - - the result has
been very satisfactory - - the 3/4 ton SUV barely recognizes that the
trailer is there, it has plenty of reserve power to safely maneuver today's
congested highways, and it achieves the same or better fuel economy than the
1/2 ton pickup that preceeded it - - in actuality, my tow vehicle exceeded
my 1.5 factor by a significant margin as its factory tow rating was/is
10,000 pounds. The cost of a 3/4 ton tow vehicle may seem steep at first,
but I think that you might find as I did that maintenance may be
significant (in my case comparing a 1995 K1500-Z71 Chevrolet Club Cab Pickup
with a 1999 K2500 Suburban) - - 20% better tire wear, 35% better brake
lining wear, u-joints have lasted twice as long and are still in good shape,
ball joints and tie rod ends have lasted 30% longer and are still in good
shape, shocks have lasted twice as long and are still in good shape, and
best yet - - the same or slightly better fuel economy solo and 10% better
economy towing in part because the Suburban can tow in overdrive and the
pickup was too underpowered to consider doing so. The pickup had a 5.7
liter V8 and the Suburban has a 7.4 liter Vortec V8. I generally tow my
trailer 6,000 to 10,000 miles per year which is why I favored towing
performance in my selection - - if your plans are not for large amounts of
long-distance travel and/or your plans do not include mountainous travel,
you may be satisfied with a tow vehicle that meets the maximum loaded weight
of your trailer - - be prepared for some potential white knuckle expereinces
on the highway.

Information about purchasing the WBCCI flags will be included with your
membership materials from International and your local unit. The same is
true of the VAC flags, the information is included with the membership
materials and can be found in the back of each issue of the Vintage
Advantage (the quarterly newsletter of the VAC). I purchased my copy of the
calendar at the International Rally in Sioux Falls, and am not certain about
which vendor is offering them.

Rene & Chrissy,

Welcome to the ranks of Airstream owners!

You ask about tow vehicles. I must echo Kevin Allen's advice. The
Mountaineer and Durango are both going to be marginal tow vehicles (at best)
for your trailer. This is a case of larger is better. You REALLY should be
looking at 3/4 ton vehicles. This means A Suburban type vehicle or a pickup.
The manufacturers all offer towing packages, make sure the vehicles that you
look at have the heavy duty towing package (equipped to handle a 10,000
pound trailer and don't let a sales person talk you into something lesser).
I guarantee that you will be pleased with the results. The suspensions on
these vehicles have come a long way in the last few years and the ride
quality and handling is generally very good. Do not let the size intimidate
you. When you get the trailer behind it you will have a much greater sense
of safety and control traveling down the road than if you tried to make a
smaller vehicle do the job.

I have towed my 26 foot Overlander now for over 20 years with many different
tow vehicles. I was amazed at the difference that a tow vehicle would make.
