Hey Tuna,
You have brought up a subject that has caused more confusion than most
people both in and out of the club realize.
Taken from the WBCCI Home page, the Wally Byam Caravan Club International
was:
"Named for the inventor of the Airstream trailer, WBCCI is composed of
10,000 Airstream owners throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico and
around the globe. Since its inception in 1955, WBCCI has provided thousands
of travel opportunities for Airstream owners with its caravans and rallies
throughout the world. WBCCI members enjoy the camaraderie, convenience, cost
savings and safety of over 1,500 events conducted by WBCCI each year.
Members can choose the fellowship of a local unit or join WBCCI as a
"member-at-large."
The Vintage Airstream Intra-Club was formed in 1993 by a group of WBCCI
members interested in providing a resource for Vintage Airstream Owners. Its
founder and first President was Bud Cooper.
The Washington, DC unit (WDCU), a Chartered Unit of Region 2 in the
WBCCI was formed in 1999 by 2 "Members at Large" that happened to own
Vintage Airstreams. Tom Howarth and William Scott recruited membership from
other "Members at Large" and other Vintage Airstream Owners that wanted the
benefits of belonging to a unit that had a predominance of Vintage Owners.
We are not the "home unit of the VAC", our unit has a number of non Vintage
owners as well, however most of them are associate Members of the VAC. We
conduct our business via email as much as possible and enjoy 3 or more
Rallies per year and a Caravan to the International Rally where we park with
all the other members of the Vintage Airstream Club.
To join the WDCU or any Local Unit just send a check to that units
Treasurer. $45 for the WBCCI and $5 to $15 to the unit depending on that
units dues structure. The WDCU's dues are presently $5 for Members and $10

Hello All,
Regardless of who, what or where you belong the heart of the WBCCI is the
unit and the activities they sponsor. The more you can attend the better it
is for all involved. Change begins at this level of the WBCCI and the more
involved you get the better the club will become. Besides, who can drive
across the country each time your unit has a Rally, I can reach most of my
unit's Rallies within 3 hours. Makes life living with 3 women in the car much
more enjoyable!

That stuff is called Gimp. Honest. While it used to be very common in the
industry it's use has declined recently. Just about any old line RV parts
store should have some stuck in the back some were. Typical cost is 10-20
cents a foot.

One of the reasons WBCCI members use numbers instead of
names and home towns on their trailers may be the same
reason social columns in local newspapers long ago stopped
identifying families who were leaving town on extended trips
elsewhere: to prevent theft back home. Numbers are
wonderfully anonymous to everyone except other WBCCI
members, who can quickly look up the number in the WBCCI
annual directory and identify the trailer owners. Thieves
and other neer'do-wells cannot as readily identify the
owners of the trailer while the trailer is on the road.
Numbers put owner identity closer on more of a "need to
know" basis than a grand public announcement. I prefer some
anonymity while on the road.

Winter arrived in Nfld suddenly with squalls and below freezing temps. I
was winterizing my trailer as it happened..just in time! Just curious as to
how much antifreeze the systyem will suck into itself before I see pink
coming out the bathroom sink. I think I can recall reading that the water
heater has to fill up first, and I dont believe there is a bypass on my '73
Tradewind . But here's the real question. In the summer of '94 I was in
Nova Scotia working on a film called "Dolores Claiborne" . Some of the
shooting was done in a town called Chester. Just outside town in a feild
behind the country store sat a tiny silver trailer. Iknew what it was, and
was in love! It took me a while to track down the owner and she agreed to
meet me at the trailer to discuss selling it . It was in rough shape,
needing lots of windows, upholstery, appliances, tires , brakes, etc. At the
time i thought it was not worth the 4000 cdn that she wanted for it. I've
always wondered where it went , did it stay in Canada? Did anyone out there
lovingly restore this Bambi? Can't stop thinking 'bout her (the Bambi)

As a newcomer to the Airstream world, the transmission discussion is pretty
disturbing. I have a '95 E250, which has had the transmission rebuilt once
already--before I even owned a trailer. This also, was an E4OD. Ford's
"customer service" wasn't exactly inspiring (some might consider it totally
lame), and I was left wondering what the world has come to when nobody is
surprised to see a transmission failure on a 3/4 ton truck at less than
70,000 miles. From the discussion, it seems that mine was not an isolated
experience.
It seems impractical to tow a trailer in 3rd gear. I don't have a
tachometer, but by ear, 50mph seems to be the limit for how fast you'd want
to go in 3rd. That's great going up a hill, but here in SC, you can cause a
considerable disturbance just by driving the speed limit (70 mph on the
interstate).
I am planning to install a temp gage and filter (just got them, thanks to
the helpful postings). But, I am quickly reaching the conclusion that the
solution is a manual transmission.

Here's another perspective on 12V power. As someone else already pointed
out, Electrical power(watts)=voltsxamps. So, if current (amperage) is
unchanged, when you go from 120 to 12V, you have decreased the power by a
factor of 10!
Now consider AC water heaters. All but the smallest ones use 220 or 240V.
That's because you need more current at 110V. You just can't get enough
current through the wires without going to larger, non-standard wiring. It
is cheaper to simply up the voltage.
So, if this is true at 110V, imagine how much more dramatic it is at 12V.
This is why the comments about wire gage must be considered very seriously.
An electrical heating element is really just a wire that is designed to
withstand the rigors of carrying "too much current". The wires that supply
the heater are not designed to handle that kind of current, and a fire will
eventually result if they are forced to do so. Basically, 12V systems are
ill-suited to any truly high-powered applications.
Most boxed coils of wire will have a current rating printed on them. If you
need to figure out your current at 12V, just divide the wattage by 12. I
always go conservative, since the incremental cost of the wire is
insignificant compared to the consequences.

Actually, the best place to get replacement fridge gaskets is an
appliance or appliance parts store. Take in a section of gasket and
find one close. They have the kind that is captured by screw-on
flanges, the push-on kind, and the adhesive kind. It won't be one piece
pre-made as it is sold by the foot, or in some cases will be the size of
a home refrigerator, but you cut the four lengths you need out of it,
angle-cut with a 45 deg notch at the corners, install vinyl tubing in
these corners to add strength - also notched. Seal the corner up with
matching colored silicone sealant.

Sadly I need to report that last weekend in the Seattle, Wash. area a
Bambi was stolen. I received a phone call from the disturbed owner and
then an e-mail with this description and a picture. It seems that he
just recently purchased it and hasn't yet transfered it into his name so
it's still in the previous owner's name. From what the owner says it
seems to be in very good condition.
If anyone suspects hearing about or seeing this unit please contact the
proper people. I'm sending the exact wording that the owner sent to me.
As far as I know Lorenze Wood was never a VAC president.
STOLEN: 1961 Bambi Airstream trailer 16' overall; California license
2FT3420, VIN 16TDSS1701, from parking lot Kitsap County on October 26
along with another plywood trailer. This trailer was formerly owned by
the president of the Vintage Airstream Club, San Diego Chapter (Lorenz
and Jean Wood -- 909-659-4352) and bears several window stickers to that
effect. Distinguishing features include AC on the roof, rear bike rake
and spare tire, small dents on rear corners, official Airstream (WBCCI)
#5925 still very visible on rear/front of trailer above windows. $1,000
reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the
