There is another change to try, related to the number of processors.
(This is a long shot, and I doubt it will affect anything, but it might.)

The XP HAL (Hardware Abstraction Layer) varies according to the
(virtual) CPU and motherboard features, and might care how many CPU
cores you have. Perhaps changing it might make it work.
HALu is a utility to change the HAL, see instructions and link here:
https://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=24823&hilit=halu&start=15

Unzip into a folder in the guest that does not have any spaces in the
pathname (unzip to C:\HALu works best).
Run HALu and select "ACPI Uniproccesor PC" or "ACPI PC" (maybe try
both and see?)

These HALs require IO APIC enabled:
ACPI Multiprocessor PC (HALu=ACPI Multiproccesor PC)
ACPI Uniprocessor PC (HALu=ACPI Uniproccesor PC)

This HAL doesn't care about IO APIC:
Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) PC (HALu=ACPI PC)

Shutdown the guest

Set VM properties, and if ACPI PC was selected, then (maybe) turn
'Enable IO APIC' off (System > Motherboard).

I guess there are 3 options to try (?):
- ACPI Uniproccesor PC, Enable IO APIC
- ACPI PC, Enable IO APIC
- ACPI PC, Disable IO APIC

Restart VM and see.

Might be a long shot.

You can see the current HAL selected with: Start > My Computer >
(right-click) > Manage > Device Manager > Computer.
