Both of the Powell Rods I have list retail for $600 but I got them much cheaper by being in the right place at the right time. Ditto for the Legend Ultra, but its regular price is only $275. To answer your question, I am sure a good fisherman could fish and cast with a typical $75.00 rod without any difficulty. But like any hobby there are other considerations... the little details like how the rod loads, reponsivness while fishing, and finally, pride of ownership. The Powell, for example, is a beautiful rod with wonderful nickel reel fittings and a rare wood reel seat. The way I look at it, my fly rod is the tool right at the heart of fly fishing, and I just want to I have a fly rod that both performs well and that I can be proud to own. I suspect it is similar feelings among other fly fishers that drives the industry.
