I don't
have any of the Sage, Loomis, etc. priced rods either, but about 2 years ago I
did "invest" in a moderately price rod (about $125) to replace my $30 rod.
It DID cast better. a lot better. Did it CATCH fish any better?
Well....the only thing is that with the better rod, I could put the fly more
accurately where I wanted it...and that did catch fish better (more?).
Almost as important, it IS a lot more fun to fish.
So, is
it worth it? I think so, at least for my primary rod. I still use
some cheap rods for my speciality rods like a short little one for use in small
mountain streams. That's an application where casting is marginal
anyhow. Eventually I will replace it, but not with a $500-600
one!

I have often wondered about the advantages of a high dollar rod. All in all I say if it isn't broke, don't fix it. Sure, one day I'll get me an Orvis or a Sage, but until then I'll be content with what I got, the fish don't seem to mind. For those of you that do own a high end rod, what are the advantages compared to my $29.95 South Bend set?
