Hey Bill, Use whatever you're comfortable with. I love my Sage DS2 9ft 5 wt, for dries and lake fish, but it's the bottom end Sage. I think it goes for $225 or thereabouts. I don't own a $600.00 rod, and I doubt I ever will. If people like theirs, then fine, I'm happy with what I've got.
I started fly fishing with an Eagle Claw. I still have it, and I still use it periodically. It's a 6wt, so I don't really need it usually. Price isn't always a good indicator of enjoyment. If I were getting paid to be a fly-fisher, I'd want top rung stuff, but I'm not. I do it because I love it. To the extent that nicer equipment makes me enjoy it more, I've made that investment, but when the curve starts to go the other way, then forget it. Sorry, a little long winded.
