When I'm on an extended fishing trip like the ones I take to New Mexico and Colorado, my fishing friends and I usually stay in a large cabin. I always take my portabletying kit along and most of them do to. After a long day on the stream and a good supper, I'll set my tying kit up and relax by tying a few flies and shooting the breeze with the others as most of them will either be tying, reading a FF rag or talking about FF in general. I never fail to learn something during these bull / tying sessions, i.e. a new pattern, a new twist to an old one or a novel way of solving a tying problem. Do I tie at stream side? Nope, never have felt the need to.

Nice post, Jim..
My favorite troutfishing experiences are of this type- observation and
adaptation.

Add rule 3.b. Preparation may include a well-planned stream-side tying kit,
and the mental preparation to know what to do with it based on your
waterside observations.
