Now I realize that tying stream side isn't for everyone, but I do enjoy it myself. I have a large Plano tackle box that holds most of my materials other then my hackles (though it's getting too full). I don't take it with me on day trip's just multi day camping trips. Last year when on a 4 day trip to my favorite river we hit a caddis hatch just right and there were fish rising everywhere. As I looked at the bugs and watched the fish taking them I noticed two things. 1. I didn't feel that the color on any of my caddis representations was right, and I had a lot of them. 2. The fish seemed to be taking the fluttering ones more then the ones with their wings down. That's not to say that they were only taking the fluttering ones just more often. I looked in my box and examined every fly, (now ducking while I say this) I tied on an Adams and cut the tail off. On my 3rd cast I had a nice little 10" redside trout take the fly, I released him and started casting again. 3 casts later I saw a mouth break the surface and suck down my fly. After a good fight and I landed a very nice 18" Trout. After fishing the rest of the day I thought about the fly I had been using and decided I could make it better and simpler. I tied up a couple flies that were nothing more then a black dubbed body and brown hackle. I caught fish left and right on this pattern the whole weekend and did better then most everyone else on that stretch of river. My friend tried caddis patterns of all kinds but didn't have the success that I did on that simple little fly I tied stream side.
Now that I've rambled on let me just say I also do it because I enjoy tying stream side sometimes when the fishing is slow.
