Deb,
Fingers are good temperature sensors! The tea kettle is what I've seen damage crests.
Also, Woolite is a must for bringing out the vibrant gold hues and shine. Nothing in the world compares to a clean straight crest.
Are those your flies periodically on Ebay?
Cheers, Brian

BrianI was taught this by Ron Alcott and I haven't damaged any feathers yet. I use a pot of boiling water on the stove for steam and just waive the feathers through it. He used tweezers I usually use my fingers to hold the feathers. That's a good gauge for me if it is getting too hot. It does a beautiful job of cleaning them.Deb----- Original Message -----From: Brian Van EremSent: Monday, June 30, 2003 9:19 PMSubject: Re: [VFB] Golden pheasant crest feathersBe VERY careful with steam!!! I don't like to use it at all if I can help it, it will damage the delicate fibers on GP crests.Brian
