Hello, I find your question interesting, first if I may lets define a jig, I would think that is simply: JIG= Hook with a determined amount of lead used on the hook by the eye of the hook to make a head. Jigs come in many different shapes and sizes and colors. I use to fish Bass tournaments in Michigan and found that the Jig was one of my favorites as well as productive. As for casting an actual jig on a fly line I would think it would have to be pretty small especially on a 7wt. in order to effectively cast it, I was wondering if perhaps fly patterns that represented the same things you are trying to represent with a jig would not be a better choice, let me give you an example. In bass fishing with a Flipping stick and a bait caster I used a rubber skirted jig of around 1/2 oz. and a piece of uncle Josh's #11 pork that we called a Jig and pig to represent a Crawfish, and we also threw lots of jigs on spinning gear for smallmouth that we never let hit the bottom by swimming them back to the boat trying to represent baitfish of many sorts. We also used Jigs to catch Walleye in many different ways. My point is that maybe you would be better off fishing a productive fly pattern that represents baitfish and crawfish and any bottom dwelling creeping thing you can find. Here are a couple of patterns that came to mind, Black egg sucking leech (wrapped with lead) or how about one of Mark D. crawfish patterns with lead dumbbell eyes, or how about a clouser with dumbbell eyes. All those patterns I just mentioned have lead and a hook, and what did we say a jig is???
lead and a hook.
I hope this helps, If it were me I would stick to spinning gear for jig heads

I have been curious to the idea of using jigs at the end of my line....I am getting to like a local length of the Patuxent River here in MD which offers more smallies and largemouths and crappies and perch than trout (perfect trout water just not stocked)....even though some behemoths have been known to swim up or come down from the reservoir when the gates are opened to release excess water...what kinds of jigs are best? and what sizes for 7 wt.?? Any killer color combos?
