Subject: Re: [VFB] Casting a big or heavy fly

The other disadvantage to a big weighted fly, like a Clouser, is that an inexperienced caster will drive the fly right into their fly rod blank.  That impact is a leading cause of fly rod breakage.  It may not happen at the time when the fly goes "whack" against your pricey graphite, but later on you wonder why your blank shattered when you pulled on your leader.

Wes,

About ten years ago,  I "Clousered"  a brand new Loomis GLX 9wt at 3 AM on Dogfish Bar on
Martha's Vineyard .  The rod broke about 3 or 4 casts after the contact. Fortunately, had
a great connection at Loomis at the time and they overnighted a rod the next morning.

I now use a "Well Digger's Arse"  instead of a "Clouser" for most uses.
