There exists a "hidden setting" in SeaMonkey (used by Dr.Chip and I, and 
probably by some others) and Thunderbird, to thread the mail by subject, 
but the default (and the standard) is to thread according to the 
"References" heading, which groups emails according to what is being 
replied to.
