For those who use SeaMonkey/Thunderbird/IceDove and want to 
change this, it's controlled by the "mail.strict_threading" 
setting as detailed a bit at:

http://kb.mozillazine.org/Stop_threading_by_subject

(though I believe it defaults to False, i.e. thread both by 
subject and by the official threading-control "In-Reply-To" and 
"References" headers)
