On SeaMonkey 2 (well, pre-2.0 beta), there are mail.strict_threading, 
mail.correct_threading and mail.thread_without_re. The latter one 
defaults to false, the other two to true. All three are shown in 
about:config (corresponding to Thunderbird's "Config Editor), but AFAICT 
they are nowhere to be seen under "Edit => Preferences" (corresponding 
to "Tools => Options" or "Thunderbird => Preferences" on some Tb versions).

Apparently Thunderbird defaults are different.
