So, is this an issue affecting vintage Macs only or, rather, older
systems? This CD recorder have been working OK connected to a 6500
(8.1-8.6) and a G3 bege (9.2.2), without the use of any third party
drivers, except for the Toast CD Reader. Maybe I should try using an
OS 8 or 9 version of the Apple CD-ROM extension?

Well, I have a Smart And Friendly external CD Burner I've used on older Macs
and this G3 tower.

It works with Toast 3.57 and its extension, and the Apple CD ROM extensions.

When firing up, the machine always gives me a warning that some third-party
extension is driving the CD Burner, but I can burn CDs with little problem.

So the Toast software may be your answer as well.

Toast CD Reader 4.1.2 was the first driver I used. Then I used CD-Sunrise and last Toast CD Reader 3.5.6. One at a time.
When I launch Toast 3.5.6 software I get this message at the bottom of the application's main window: "No CD recorder. Please check the cables and power." I click on "Search"... same result.

Tried SCSI 3, 2 and 1.
Later I'll connect the CD drive to a 6100 and see what happens. Maybe something is wrong with the drive. It's been a few months since I used it last time.
