Thanks Mike for the detailed response.
Yes Ive had problems recently. Have posted all in this post only. To
summarise a battery suddenly dying on me without clues. Everything looks all
right in the charging system which has been working fine for the last 10 years
on my dub. The system has a non VW charging setup.
We can have a free charge test which I have already had done. The car
passed with no issues. So now I think I should replace the regulator. I plan to
put in a post 73 VW altrnator soon. It is all cleaned and ready to go in.
One question. I have seen two types of fans. One has a series of punched out
circles near the centre. I guess this is done to lighten the unit. I got a
solid fan with the alt.
The alt itself seems to be a Bosch unit but its missing its sticker/ID
plate. The terminals are marked DF, D+ and D-. A fourth unmarked one accepts a
circular clip which has to be tightened on by a nut.
We only get Japanese and Chinese aftermarket regulators here. No Bosch
units available now. I do have a second hand unit which is supposed to be
working but I see the cover has been off and the internals probably fiddled
with. So I guess a safer approach is to go for the best quality brand new unit
available.
I also have a complete spare engine which comes with a different kinda alt
which has the solid state built in regulator. Havent touched it as yet.
The pedestal does look as if its been cut but I guess its the genuine cut as
its quite a good job! Have inspected it closely and there are no chances of
leakage of oil.
Thanks,
Asad
