The three prongs on the externally-regulated
alternator are marked D+, DF, and D-.
DF & D- go to the slipring brushes.
D+ needs to have a warning lamp connected to it (the
alternator receives its initial field flash from
ignition-switched power feeding back through the bulb
filament).
Note that the stock external regulator (C1 in the
diagram below) has a blue wire coming out of it that
goes nowhere - the blue wire from the warning lamp
connects to the RED D+ wire.

There are 4 pedestals used on carbureted engines from
`61 up.
113 101 211 is for the smaller-diameter generators
(most 6V Beetle, also 12V 356).
113 101 211B is for the large diameter generators (12V
Beetle, also late 6V) with a singleport intake
manifold.
113 101 211E is like the 211B but clearanced slightly
on the bottom of the saddle for the larger dualport
intake manifold.
113 101 211G is like the 211E but the saddle has
clearance for the larger alternator housing:
http://www.oeveedub.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=oe&Product_Code=113-101-211G&Category_Code=bug-charging

You can use a 211E for a 211B.
You can use a 211G for an E or B.
The 211 will clear a DP intake.
The 211B can be used on a dualport with dual carbs.

Note that the new internal-regulator alternators
(AL82) have a couple of ribs cast into the underside
of the housing which may need to be filed shorter in
order for the alternator to sit down properly in the
saddle - when you get one of those be sure to check
this BEFORE bolting on the fan, while it's still easy
to slip out for clearancing.

Both the old "36HP" (30DIN HP) and most "40HP" (34DIN
HP) fans have the holes; they were dropped ~1965, I
believe just to reduce noise - so all "40HP" and
13/15/1600 singleport fans are interchangeable. The
"36HP" and earlier fans had fewer blades.
The fans used on dualport "doghouse" shrouds are
slightly wider, and won't fit inside a stock
12/13/15/1600SP shroud.
