Hi Alan, I have an iPhone X. I didn't have a luck-up when I turned on the mic. When I do a recording, VoiceOver gets quieter; I think it goes to the earpiece - but it doesn't stop altogether. I tried the same thing with a 5s and had the same results. Maybe try restarting your phone to see if you'll have better luck.
