Richard, and Sieghard, thank you for the additional instructions, and the 
testing you both did, though it's not working here. I'll keep both instructions 
from both of you, and at some point possibly something will click, but right  
now as much as we did even this time it's not working here. I'm going to see 
what I could find on the apple vis site, and  ask one of the guys from t-mobile 
when we see him this week.

        I suspect the default voice is changing just fine, but your rotor is 
not on the default voice.
        I have the iPhone SE, I have Siri Female as the default voice, but I 
tend to leave the rotor on Tom Enhanced because VoiceOver will change language 
when on the default voice when you hit text with a code from another country. 
Like someone writing from France, the voice will switch to french from the 
default voice, but not from a secondary voice on the rotor. I prefer Tom, so I 
keep the rotor on Tom.
        Having said all that, I just set the rotor to the "default Voice" which 
as I said is Siri female.
        Then, I went into VoiceOver speech settings, double tapped on the 
default voice.
        I then double tapped on Samantha Enhanced, and the voice changed 
immediately to Samantha.
        I backed out of the settings, and hit the home button, and Samantha is 
still speaking.
        I went back in and switched the default voice back to Siri Female, and 
Siri female began speaking immediately.
        I went out of settings, and it is still using Siri Female.
        I will now turn the rotor to Tom and am back on Tom.
        So, make sure the rotor is set to the voice you want, and then turn the 
rotor to another item, like words, so you do not accidentally change the voice.

be from Wayne in telling about our experience with him working on changing the

samantha back. So I was able to switch back to samantha without any problem. 
Now that I want to check out Tom a little more I can't get it to switch back. 
As a matter of fact, I got out of there, after selecting Tom, thinking he would 
be speaking, but it was samatha, so going back into check,it said the Tom was 
the default voice. I tried to select other voices, but it won't change from 
Tom, but it's samantha who's speaking.On the second phone, we downloaded Tom 
and selected him as the default voice, everything looked good. Then we got out 
of  the settings, and samantha was still talking. So we went back in there to 
check it out and Tom is still the default voice. For the third phone, which has 
been running the tom voice for at least 2 months, I just now went into settings 
to check the voices, it says samantha is the default voice. I figured to change 
that to Tom, it wouldn't hurt anything, and I did. Got out of settings, Tom's 
still talking and went back into settings, and now it actually says Tom's the 
default voice. We're almost afrait to switch it to another voice because it 
might take, and switch to another voice. Here's why, we wanted to know if we 
could switch the ipad to Tom, went in there, Tom needed to be downloaded, so we 
did. I selected Tom as the default voice, this worked as  expected and it 
changed to Tom. So we decided since that worked let's change back to samantha. 
So I went back into changing the voice We went back in there, and samantha is 
the default voice, you could even play the voice sample, but it's still Tom 
talking. Possibly no one is having these issues if they haven't changed voices 
in a long time. by the way, We have powered off and simply rebooted and that 
didn't help. So maybe some of you could choose a favorite voice and see if it 
will change as it should. Just to make sure it wasn't something between smantha 
and tom, I tried another voice, but it will say that the default voice is the 
last voice you chose, and on top of all of that it may not be the voice that's 
talking, in other words it won't change.

                        Think of a round knob which you want to turn when you 
try to turn the rotor.

                        If it’s a physical knob, say a dimmer switch, you would 
put your thumb on the bottom, maybe sort of like the 7 o’clock position and 
your index finger opposite at the top in the approximate position of 1 o’clock. 
Then you would turn the knob clockwise (or counter clockwise).

                        The rotor is very similar. Try to put both your thumb 
and index finger onto the screen at the same time into this same position, 
about 6 or 7 o’clock and 12 or 1 o’clock, then immediately make a little 
turning motion clockwise so you end up approx. in the 9 o’clock position with 
your thumb and the 3 o’clock position with your index finger.

                        If you do it right you most likely hear “characters” 
but I tcould be something else depending on where your rotor is when you start, 
most likely it will be on Actions and you probably hear Characters. If you lift 
up and repeat you will hear “Words” If you end up on words and do the same 
gesture in reverse, e.g. make the turn counter clockwise you will go back to 
characters, then Actions.

                        There are lots of useful items in the rotor menu, of 
course there is characters, words and, depending on the context, you maybe have 
lines or headings etc. This means you can then review text by flicking down and 
it will jump in whatever increment you set, by character, by word, by line or 
it will go from heading to heading if, for example, you are on a web page or in 
an email which has headings etc.

                        Don’t forget that you have the Voiceover practice area 
in Voiceover settings, you can also invoke the practice/help mode by doing a 
double tap with 4 fingers. Voiceover will say “Starting help, to to stop help, 
perform a 4-finger double tap or 2-finger scrub or press escape on the 
keyboard”.

                        Once you are in help mode you can practice all your 
taps, swipes, rotor turns etc. Voiceover will echo what gesture you performed 
and it can be very useful to practice making crisp and clean gestures. It can 
also be useful to try how hard or soft you have to tap, in fact, you don’t have 
to tap hard at all for just about all gestures to work and since your SE 
doesn’t have 3D Touch which does require taps that are a bit harder or more 
forceful pressing down on the screen you can really keep your gestures very 
light.

                        Thank you for responding to me. We got our se phones 
when I updated my t-mobile account on march 8th, and we're coming along pretty 
well with learning everything, and these are the first smart phones we both 
ever had, so we still have some more to learn. I've heard about the rotor 
explained a number of times and described, and I've tried to follow the 
description of going around on the screen sort of like dialing a phone, but I 
apologize for my ignorance here, I don't get the rotor and how to do it. In 
navigating on the phone, I'll here voice over say something about the rotor, so 
I'm sorry I haven't caught on to the rotor. We've been in the settings where 
you change the voice and yes us english is selected, we've made sure of that. 
I'm not sure right now and can't ask since he's sleeping but I'm not sure if my 
boy friend has an understanding of the rotor, even slightly more than I do. 
Thank you again for writing. We're almost thinking there may be something we've 
forgotten from being able to do it before. In fact today Wayne changed the 
voice from samantha to the tom voice on our ipad mini which went fine, and then 
he tried to change the tom voice back to the samantha voice but for some reason

                                        Mr. Ed, thank you. We did turn the 
phone off and back on again. when you go to do it and the voice is selected, 
that's all normal and it seems as if it would change since it's selected fine, 
but we can't get int to change to any of the voices besides Tom enhanced. We 
tried to change the voice on our ipad mini and that did work. So I don't know 
if this is a bug, possibly that not everyone would be affected by. I wonder if 
it's possible with this new update if we would be able to change voices again, 
as we were able to do about a month ago..

turn off your iPhone and then turned it back on. Just a thought if you haven’t

                                        We tried that as well and somehow it 
still doesn't change. About a month ago, we were able to do it fine, it worked 
fine with the downloading of the voice and changing the voice. In fact, my 
boyfriend couldn't get it to even change to one of the other voices. So there

                                        I think you are missing one last step. 
Make sure in the list of voices, it  doesn’t say “download” which would mean 
the voice is not downloaded. Once confirmed that the voice is downloaded double 
tap on the name and double tap again on the name. You will have to double tap 
on the name which appears just left of the option “speak sample.”  Again, the 
voice name you are double tapping on would have “speak sample” option if you 
swipe right from the place double tapping where would change the voice to the 
desired one. 

                                        Please try this. And let us know how it

                                        One last comment on this since you seem 
not very interested in following what others recommend, just because you had 
one unfavourable experience with Apple Accessibility doesn’t mean it will be 
the same next time. Any support line is like this, sometimes you get somebody 
who is awesome and another time you don’t.

                                        Anyhow, I just went through this on my 
iPhone following your steps, i.e. Voiceover Settings > Speech > Voice, then I 
found Tom in the list and downloaded the voice.

                                        Here is my question, have you actually 
downloaded the voice and waited long enough for it to download? It is well over 
466 Mb so depending on your internet connection speed this could be anywhere 
from a few minutes to maybe 20 minutes.

                                        The way you would know is if you flick 
right through the voices and it says “Tom, button”, then it’s downloaded. 

                                        If it says “Tom, 466 MegaBytes” and if 
you flick right once more it says “Download, Tom” then it’s not downloaded and 
you need to double tap on “Download, Tom” button, wait until it’s done (it will 
show you the download progress in percentage).

                                        Anyhow, after it is downloaded and it 
simply says “Tom, button” you double tap on that, then flick right past “Tom” 
and “Speak Sample” to “Tom, Enhanced” and now double tap on this.

                                        For me as soon as I do this the voice 
immediately switches to the Tom Enhanced voice, if you get all of what I 
describe and this doesn’t happen then I don’t know what is wrong with your 
phone and if you don’t want to call Apple Accessibility then maybe at some 
point you get to an Apple Store and you can ask somebody there to check it out 
for you.

                                        I will never call apple accessibility 
again, once was enough for me. Before I could even have them assist me that

                                        If not, I'd call Apple Accessibility 
and ask them to do a screen share so they can see exactly what is happening.

phone.

I shared my screen with Apple and leave the screen curtain on. Talk about 
feeling stupid.

explaining step-by-step what you do.

                                        The only thing that is obvious to me is 
that you obviously are in Voiceover Settings when you start, but I would start 
here and put down things like 1. Double tap on Speech, 2. Double tap on Voice 
etc.

                                        Also, point out what it currently says, 
e.g. I use Samantha Enhanced so when I swipe to “Voice” after tapping on 
“Speech”, Voiceover says “Voice, Samantha Enhanced button”.

                                        Lastly, let us know what you are trying 
to do, here are the 3 options you have:

                                        1. Do you want to change your default 
voice from whatever it is now to Tom Enhanced without adding a second voice?

                                        2. Do you want Tom Enhanced to be your 
default voice and have another voice available as a second option which you can 
choose with the language rotor?

                                        3. Do you want another voice to be the 
default and have Tom Enhanced as a second voice which you can choose with the 
language rotor?

actually tom was already in there, so we weren't adding voices. Wayne was able 
to change the voice last month on one of the phones and even on that one we

                                        I assume you somehow are missing a 
step. Are you changing the default voice or are you adding a second voice? If 
you are adding Tom as a second voice then after you have done so you need to 
turn the rotor to languages and flick up or down to select it. Otherwise maybe 
give Apple Accessibility a call and see if they can walk you through it step by 
step over the phone.

double tap on accessibility, then double tap on voiceover, double tap on 
speech, double tap  on voice, than double tap download button  next to Tom. 
Once Tom is downloaded double tap on Tom and double tap on top in hats. Then
