Here’s what I don’t understand.

A friend of mine is an interpreter for the deaf. She works at a national24-hour-a-day, 7-day a week, TTY company.

This is a video service for the deaf. Basically, a deaf person uses it tomake telephone calls to hearing people. Both the deaf person and theinterpreter use video so the deaf person can sign to the agent and the agentspeaks to the hearing person on the other end of the line.

The deaf people don’t pay for this service as it is paid for by thegovernment.

The deaf people can stay on any call to anyone as long as they like. Somecalls last up to 5 hours, sometimes, on a daily basis.

Now what I don’t understand is why this same service cannot be use for us,the visually impaired. I just don’t get it.

I don’t understand why when it comes to these kinds of things, we, the blindand low vision, are so far behind the deaf community.

For example, video close-caption, is standard on every cable box yet audiodescription is not.

I would be hesitant to use the service in situations where personallyidentifiable information is being used. I do not know if their employees arebonded.

There are other apps that can do some of this, but I know from personalexperience they aren't nearly as fast or as convenient as using Aira. If you live a lifestyle where you need this level of assistance whether it’smaybe for a difficult job or whatever else you might like to do then it’sactually ot that expensive. How many hours of assistance can you getone-on-one if you paid somebody $15 an hour? Easy calculation, at $329 forunlimited service that would be 22 hours a months which is just a bit lessthan 45 minutes a day. I think also that for many people the 400 minutes or6 hours and 40 minutes for $199 is enough and the big benefit is that theassistance is available just about any time you need it and not when maybeyou asked whoever helps you to stop by.On the other hand, paying $199 for 400 minutes works out to almost $30 anhour. In any case, it sounds as if those who can afford it and have it allagree it is worth it.

Wow, my rent costs less than the unlimited minutes per month. Why not justuse apps that are already available that don’t cost anywhere near thisamount. I just can’t see spending that amount of money, but that is just myopinion.

The Samsung phone included with the new glasses is simply for providingpower to the glasses. Apparently Talk Back is locked out, so you can't usethe phone as a phone, so you still will have 4 pieces of hardware, theiPhone, the bluetooth headset, the Samsung phone, and the glasses. Theadvantage to this system is that you don't have to charge the glassesseparately, as the Samsung phone will power them.

They are introducing a new model called the horizon and this is a new pairof glasses that have the camera in the middle and operates with a Samsungphone that is dedicated for just Aira. i agree with michael. When I was working I would have had the same issues.But my friends who have the service absolutely love it, in fact, they seemto be addicted to it, and I think that is a negative. Lately they seem to beeverywhere, doing an advertising blitz and I almost feel like it's beingshoved down my throat. But i think there is a use case for it, and if mycircumstances were different, I might consider it. I think it's neat, butcertainly not for everyone. I do wish that there was a way that the glassescould interface directly with the iPhone so you wouldn't need anotherdevice. As it is you have your phone, some way to get audio, i. e. bluetoothheadset, the glasses, and either a mobile hot spot or another phone that youwould need to power the glasses. You need to make sure that all of thesepieces are charged and in working order, and if one link in the chain fails,you're back to your own skills.

I believe that if you use all of your minutes in a givenmonth that you can then purchase more time but as of right now I do not knowhow much it cost to add time to the current month.
