Hi Grant, I have seen a few springboard crashes put the phone into something like safe mode where a lot of drivers are not loaded. It's not a pretty sight!

Hi David, This is not a reboot or a reset. All that is caused is a crash of your springboard. Think of it as the explorer.exe process on a PC running Windows. If that process is crashed, you can restart the process much faster than restarting the whole PC because while it's an important process, you do not need to reload all of the other componentry of your OS. Likewise here. When you crash the springboard--which is the mechanism used to launch apps and display the home screens--it automatically restarts. It takes less time because you are not restarting iOS, you're merely reloading the springboard process. To summarize again, this is not, the same as resetting your iPhone.
