Hi Davy,

I don’t quite agree, there are people who because of some reason cannot get the
gestures on the new X/XS/XR phones right. For them I think an iPhone 8 is a
great choice, it is a really good phone and still has a home button, also it is
much cheaper and will be probably even cheaper this fall when the new 2019
phones come out. I think if somebody buys an iPhone 8 this fall and if that
person doesn’t care about having the latest and greatest that they can happily
use this iPhone 8 for at least 4 and probably 5 years. Maybe they won’t get the
latest iOS update in the last year, but so what. As for having to deal with the
gestures and Face Id I agree maybe with the gestures since I doubt a home
button comes back to the phone, but I don’t think it’s impossible to imagine
that in a year or two or three Apple may give us a choice of Face Id or Touch
Id, but if that is so Touch Id wont be via a Touch Id home button but because
the latest screens and chips can support touch Id anywhere on a phone’s screen.
I am not saying this will be so, but I am saying it very well could be so and
if somebody buys an 8 now this change if it comes will have happened by the
time they need to upgrade next.

Jewel

A good advise.

Why are so many blinds so anxious to move to the x series of the iphone?

It has been 5 years now that I have bought my humble 5s even not knowing what a
touch screen was. A month later I found myself to be an intermediate voiceover
user and now I am advanced.

So please please Jewel, if you want a good investment plan on buying an iphone,
just buy teh xr 64 GB yes yes without a home button. In less then 10 minutes
you will be used to these very simple and intuitive gestures. Even if you are
rather a beginner and stay on that level, that makes no difference yes you can
everybody can.
And think twice Jewel, one day you have to, one day you will be obliged to use
such devices without nearly any buttons. For all those doubting about that,
please step out of your home button comfort zone!
Regards
Davy

Jewel,
If you find this Fall that you really want to upgrade to have iOS 13, then I'd
consider the 8 plus.
It still has the home button; and while larger, has great battery life, and
should last through a few more iOS versions.
It does not have the 3.5 MM earphone jack; but nothing after the SE does' so
you have to go with the lightning earphones or bluetooth anyway.
Besides, there will probably be another new phone this fall.

Not necessarily. It’s not like a 5S will just stop working or at least stop
working with apps right away. Like with prior iOS upgrades, apps will probably
drop support for older OS’s as time goes by and even then, it’ll likely be a
while before you begin to notice it to where you’ll feel the impact.
If iOS 12.3.1 is working ok for you, then it’s not like not being able to
upgrade to V 13will be a huge loss. Honestly, at this point, I’d bet that the
simple fact that you’re running a 5S is more the issue for things like
performance.
Regardless of being able to upgrade or not to the new iOS, you should give
consideration to upgrading your phone period.
Off hand, I’d say try to aim for at the very least a 7 or 7+. I know the 6S 6S+
and SE made the cut this time, but since the phones just one year older got the
axe, I wouldn’t bet on these phones making the cut for iOS 14 next year. If you
follow the trend, that would maybe give you two more years of OS life cycles
with the 7 series to count on if the newer phones are beyond your budget.

Does this mean that I will have to ditch my 5S? If so, what would you advise
as a replacement, with as small a new learning curve as possible, please:

These are the devices that will support iOS 13:

iPhone XS

iPhone XS Max

iPhone XR

iPhone X

iPhone 8

iPhone 8 Plus

iPhone 7

iPhone 7 Plus

iPhone 6s

iPhone 6s Plus

iPhone SE

iPod touch (7th generation)

In comparison to the iOS 12 release last year, Apple has dropped support for
the iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus. Despite earlier rumors to the
contrary, the iPhone SE is still supported by this year’s iOS 13 release. The
iPod touch 6th generation has been dropped, however.

Meanwhile, as for the new iPadOS 13release, Apple says that these iPads are
supported:

12.9-inch iPad Pro

11-inch iPad Pro

10.5-inch iPad Pro

9.7-inch iPad Pro

iPad (6th generation)

iPad (5th generation)

iPad mini (5th generation)

iPad mini 4

iPad Air (3rd generation)

iPad Air 2

This means that Apple has dropped supported for the iPad mini 2 and iPad mini
3, as well as the original iPad Air.
