I would agree. Plenty of budget and midrange Android phones still use LCD. I think OLED is the superior technology though, but that doesn't mean LCD is obsolete. I've read plenty of reviews recently where side by side the XS looks better than the XR with blacker blacks and more contrast, but that doesn't mean the LCD display on the XR isn't a great display. Remember the XR has a larger battery, 2,942 MAH versus 2,658, plus Apple may not have optimized IOS for the OLED display and how people use their phones.

seems to have better battery life than the iPhone xS? OLED technology is
definitely coming down in price as it is used more just as solid state drives
now only cost a fraction of what they cost 5 or 6 years ago, but if Apple can
offer a phone with an LCD screen for a much lower price and are willing to do
so (I am thinking of the iPhone 8) than I am all for it.

My reasons for continuing to use this iPhone 6 are different. When I got my 5,
and this one, Verizon subsidized half the cost. Now that I have to pay it all,
I will continue to use this one as long as it will run, and Apple keeps
updating it, which in its own way, has hurt Apple sales. Why shouldn't people
keep updating their old devices to the latest firmware as long as they can.
Then, I wanted to wait until the OLED display made it to the cheap models,
which it sort of did last year, hopefully, it will completely replace liquid
crystals this fall. OLED is so much more efficient, and besides, liquid
crystals are an obsolete technology. Also, the new ones allegedly will have 5 G
modems, so even tight old me probably will get a new one later on this fall.

I would even grab an 8plus if I could find one on the cheap.

Hi Sieghard

Thats really right. I was in the same situation and replaced my
battery a year ago and now I have bought my xr but as you say with
normal use I will confirm that the 5s for a device of that time being,
is just working great with ios12.3, however my xr is much more faster
but if I couldn’t afford it for now, I would not be unlucky while I
always had to wait 3 or 5 seconds for an app to open. There are other reasons
in life to be unlucky about.

Apart from not having the new features of iOS 13 you can continue to
happily use the iPhone 5S with iOS 12 for another year or two. If you
got your iPhone 5S in 2013 then it will be 6 years old this fall, if
you can use it for another year you would have definitely gotten your
money’s worth and unless you changed the battery already I doubt
battery life even now is that great. I have a friend in Germany who
got a 5S back then and he just had the battery replaced.

Not necessarily. It’s not like a 5S will just stop working or at least
stop working with apps right away. Like with prior iOS upgrades, apps
will probably drop support for older OS’s as time goes by and even
then, it’ll likely be a while before you begin to notice it to where
you’ll feel the impact.

If iOS 12.3.1 is working ok for you, then it’s not like not being able
to upgrade to V 13will be a huge loss. Honestly, at this point, I’d
bet that the simple fact that you’re running a 5S is more the issue
for things like performance.

Regardless of being able to upgrade or not to the new iOS, you should
give consideration to upgrading your phone period.

Off hand, I’d say try to aim for at the very least a 7 or 7+. I know
the 6S
6S+ and SE made the cut this time, but since the phones just one year
6S+ older
got the axe, I wouldn’t bet on these phones making the cut for iOS 14
next year. If you follow the trend, that would maybe give you two more
years of OS life cycles with the 7 series to count on if the newer
phones are beyond your budget.

Does this mean that I will have to ditch my 5S? If so, what would you
advise as a replacement, with as small a new learning curve as
possible,

These are the devices that will support iOS 13:

iPhone XS

iPhone XS Max

iPhone XR

iPhone X

iPhone 8

iPhone 8 Plus

iPhone 7

iPhone 7 Plus

iPhone 6s

iPhone 6s Plus

iPhone SE

iPod touch (7th generation)

In comparison to the iOS 12 release last year, Apple has dropped
support for the iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus. Despite
earlier rumors to the contrary, the iPhone SE is still supported by this year’s
iOS 13 release.
The iPod touch 6th generation has been dropped, however.

Meanwhile, as for the new iPadOS 13release, Apple says that these
iPads are
supported:

12.9-inch iPad Pro

11-inch iPad Pro

10.5-inch iPad Pro

9.7-inch iPad Pro

iPad (6th generation)

iPad (5th generation)

iPad mini (5th generation)

iPad mini 4

iPad Air (3rd generation)

iPad Air 2

This means that Apple has dropped supported for the iPad mini 2 and
iPad mini 3, as well as the original iPad Air.
