Many banks participate in a program known as "zelle" which does direct
payments without any transaction charges. Not as slick as applepay, but
typically well integrated into your banking app. Chase, for example, has it
tightly integrated within their app, and it works well. The recipient
doesn't have to be a chase customer ... just a customer of a participating
bank. For folks I'm only going to pay once, ApplePay is fine (if they've
already got an account). Typically, if it's someone I've got an ongoing
relationship with, I try to coax them to sign up with zelle.
