Hi Sandy,

I feel so silly for not thinking about the scrub gesture to get out of the App
Switcher, Control Center, etc. I even used the scrub gesture a time or two
today for other things…it just didn’t enter my mind that this could be a
solution for some of my issues today. 😳 Thank you so much for reminding me! It
helps so much when exiting the App Switcher, Control Center and to move
backwards through menus.

Could you elaborate a bit more about setting "home" as the macro for a double
tap on the back of the phone. I think there was discussion about this on the
list, but It wasn’t pertinent to me so I didn’t absorb much. What is the
process for setting up actions that happen by tapping on the back of the phone?

It appears I may be getting better with using the gesture to open the App
Switcher and Control Center. The man who sold me the phone, said I needed to
touch a visual bar, that is a fraction above the case, before sliding the
finger. so I’ve been turning/twisting various fingers, trying to start sliding
from the case up. Others on this list today referred to use of a flick
gesture, which initially confused me as flicking means the finger taps and
quickly leaves the display; like flicking a bug away. I’m now trying a motion
that begins like a flick, but instead of touching the display and quickly
leaving it, the pad of my finger lands a tiny bit above the case, and then
slides toward the top of the display. It kind of feels like an ice skater
jumping onto ice and then sliding. There’s probably a better movement, but at
least it appears to be getting easier.

Oh, I almost always have Siri open apps. I typically go to the App Switcher to
close apps, which Siri won’t do, along with opening the App Switcher. I know
some might question my desire to close apps; it’s just my preference.

To be honest, back in the day, I never thought I could use an iPhone, but with
time/experience, I developed pretty good skill. I’m certain things are going
to get easier, especially with the kind support of others, like yourself, to
get me through the learning curve.

Lastly, in case anyone is curious, my Instacart issue was resolved by deleting
and reinstalling the app (Apple Accessibility suggestion). . Also, something I
didn’t mention, is that many of my news alerts weren’t coming via
notifications. After going to the app, and ensuring the settings were
configured correctly, the alerts are starting to roll in again. VO is still
not reading notifications on the lock screen, but Apple Accessibility reminded
me I could simply use “hey Siri” to get the notifications read. It seems like
a good plan, but I have never used “hey Siri” so will try to remember and get
in the habit of doing that until the feature returns to my phone.

Katriona,

A couple of weeks ago, I made the same upgrade as you and can identify
with your frustrations. First thing I did was set "home" as the macro for a
double tap on the back of the phone. When I am in the control centre,
especially by mistake, I find that I can get out by a scrub gesture. Mind you,
you have to wait a second or two for it to move you out of the control centre.

I too, have to make several attempts to use the bottom of screen and slide
up, for the home button, So, rarely use it. Remember Siri can help. Instead of
using the app switcher to go to another running app, I just reopen it using
Siri.

HTH a bit, and I am relying upon the fact that many here say that they
don't miss the home button. I have always found the VO gestures intuitive and
am disappointed with the one we have to use for Home and App Switcher.

Mind you, I do think this is a much superior phone, especially, the camera
functionality, than the 8.

    Sandy and Z.

Hello All,

I replaced my iPhone 8 yesterday with a 14 Pro 256 and IOS 16 iPhone.1.
Although I am managing to deal with no home button, it certainly isn’t easy
yet. Although I will probably have additional questions in the future, for
now, I would appreciate any answers or thoughts about the following:

1. I’m not able to sign in to the Instacart app. After entering the
E-mail address and password, there appears to be a captcha, including a visual
and audio challenge. I click on the audio option and then play; hear the
challenge, but then I can’t move forward. There is a field to enter what I
heard; I double tap, as VO says to do, and nothing; no keyboard is displayed
and there’s no dictate button. You can click on a new challenge, visual
challenge and verify (the latter results in VO saying “in progress” of course
an answer was entered so I didn’t expect anything to happen). Hopefully there
is an easy solution to this.
2. Voiceover (VO) is still not getting notifications on the lock screen.
I had hoped this would be resolved by getting a newer phone. FYI, I have the
setting for Siri to announce notifications turned off, as it seems redundant to
have VO and Siri do the same thing, and because I thought it might cause a
conflict. Thoughts?
3. Because of the design of the 14 Pro, I’m finding it less efficient to
back out of menus, etc. On prior phones, I could quickly touch the top/left of
the display to find the back button. Now, if I go to high, I activate the
Control Center; if I could only activate the Home Screen and App Switcher as
easily (i.e. I can activate them eventually but usually after numerous attempts
to slide my finger from the bottom up). 😀 Now that I’m in the Control Center, I
have to go through the attempts to return to the Home Screen, and then attempt
to find the back button by swiping a lot. Is there an easier way to navigate
menus, or tricks to make the process more efficient?
4. Is it possible to change a setting so that the Control Center doesn’t
open when touching the top of the display?
5. Again, getting out of areas like the Control Center, App Switcher and
submenus on the Home Screen can be done, but it is certainly a challenge. I
put my finger at the bottom, above the lightening port, and slide up to the
first vibration and let go. The thing is it takes me multiple attempts to feel
the vibration, so I assume I didn’t start in the proper place, low enough, etc.
Hopefully this will eventually get easier, but in the meantime suggestions are
welcome. Is there an alternative to what I’m doing to exit these areas (e.g.
can Siri help, could the side button help, etc.)? I recall someone reporting
on this list, that she heard VO announce something to identify the Home Screen
and App Switcher, and then she lifts her finger. Should VO be announcing that
for me? I just get the vibration. Should I wait longer to let go in order to
hear VO?
Looking forward to receiving any support you can provide,
Katrina
