Even though I can do those gestures, I am slow with them, and just got tired of
having to try them multiple times before they would work. So I just went to
settings and changed them to something else that would be easier and quicker.
On the iPhone, you can change gestures to something else that is easier for you
to do. You just have to make sure that it is either a gesture that you do not
use, or one that is not currently assigned to anything.

I personally did not use the two finger swipe left or the two finger swipe
right. So I made the two finger swipe left my gesture to go hone, and the two
finger swipe right my gesture to go to the app switcher.
So I now do not have to worry about those slide up gestures at all.

Another gesture I did, was I assigned the four finger swipe down to go to the
status bar. So to go to the notification center, I do a four finger swipe
down, then I quickly do a three finger swipe down.
All of this is just personal preference, but it is good that Apple does give us
the opportunity to customize gestures the way that works best for us.

To customize gestures;
Go to Settings / Accessibility / Voiceover / Commands / touch, and in there you
will find all of the current voiceover gestures, and the ability to change them
to something else.
Again, I would not change any gestures that you currently use on a regular
basis.

Hope this helps.
