The map data is from Navteq, the same as the APH Android app, but Mike may mentioned the Mapquest engine as what they are based on, so I suspect they are not simply trusting the Mapquest system to get them from point a to point b, but I'm not a programmer, so asking Sendero Group for more details will be one of my next steps.
For what it is worth, I've only had one bad route from Mapquest, where Navigon has trouble even finding addresses much less creating routes in my area. As all GPS apps and devices say, they are not to be depended on exclusively, but used in conjunction with ones own common sense. OK, they don't say it quite that way, but that is the gist of the warnings with all the GPS products I have used.
