I did have problems unzipping on VMS (it put <CR> in all the files) So I
downloaded and unzipped the archive on my Windozes machine and transferred
the files over to the Alpha cluster. So I'm not sure the unzipped files were
the problem. It seems to me that the build would have aborted much sooner
than it did. Lacking any other solution I will download the zip archive
created on VMS and give it a try. Thanks for your help.

Aha. The ZIP files distributed on CPAN are created on and for
Windows. You'll want the .tar.gz version, which unfortunately means
acquiring vmstar and gunzip if you don't already have them. These
are available from numerous VMS freeware sites.

Alternately there is a zipped archive of 5.6.1 (plus some extra
extensions) available at <http://www.sidhe.org/vmsperl>. That zip
file was created on VMS so it won't cause any problems.
