I would like to clear up a little confusion. A mass spectrometer only measures the mass/charge ratio of ions. These ions are made by bombarding the gas with electrons.

Ah. So they are only transient, appearing during the measurement itself. I was wondering.

These measurement techniques have many ins and outs, and side effects. You have to be an expert to judge them, which I obviously am not. To translate and work on these papers, I go to the manufacturer's web sites to read specification sheets and manuals, which are helpful. You can learn enough to be dangerous in a short time.
