He built an elaborate purification machine in his lab for a project unrelated to cold fusion. It was mounted on a large piece of plywood. He said that commercial suppliers of hydrogen usually have good purification equipment. A small electrolysis machine designed for home use would not have as many filters and safety features as a large one. Most commercial production of hydrogen for industrial uses is done starting with hydrocarbons, with heat processing. I do not know about the hydrogen supplied for laboratory use. According to the book "Tomorrow's Energy" a commercial hydrogen pipeline in Germany has been in operation for many decades with perfect safety. - Jed
