Permission from the spouse isn't a problem here. We're both learning to
fish, and we got her an outfit and class a bit before I did -- that was
a year ago, shortly before I retired.  She's very supportive when it
comes to equipment or tying supplies, but we've been content to stick
with modest lines (St. Croix, Thompson, etc.). If SHE starts studying
the wish books, then at two of each, I'M in trouble ;).

On the other hand, we too are envious of the amount of time many of you
spend on the water. In our case, I don't like crowds, and she doesn't
care for cold days, really strong currents, or boats. It calls for a
different set of compromises, but I have a great time studying the
sport, and she frequently out fishes me.
