Re the side issue of receiving SMS messages hours after they are sent:-
This may be a WiFi out-of-range (or switched off) problem.   Do have the iPhone 
set to send/receive data?   I have seen this problem associated with iMessage, 
but I assume the DEFS system would be more sophisticated.

A DEFS question:  do other iPhone owners have the same problem?   As you have 
access to the group list, you could possibly set up a temporary iPhone service 
to test for incoming messages.
