One thing that would probably help would be to create a AWS AMI for a fully working server which can be deployed in a few minutes for evaluation. All the extensions etc and working out of the box.
This is what the Hadoop project did and it increased participation expotentially. Hadoop was a bear to set up initially abd you needed many instances to evaluate. This is much the same.
