The amount of RAM the Memory control panel reports as being available for
Virtual Memory's use is not always the same as the actual amount of RAM
physically present. Any RAM allocated to a RAM disk or disk cache (and
there may be other uses that qualify) will not be considered available
for VM use. Barry has 128M installed, and 4M allocated to his disk cache.
The fact that his Memory control panel only show 123M available for VM
use may indicate that he has a 1M RAM disk set. Barry? IMHO, it's quite
unlikely for a new computer to have bad RAM (not impossible, just
unlikely).
At any rate, TechTool is a good recommendation. I use the freeware
version all the time for rebuilding my desktop DB's. Unlike the Finder,
which "rebuilds" the pre-existing desktop DB (or at least it used to),
TechTool completely erases the DB and forces the Finder to create a
"virgin" file, leaving nothing to chance. TT does other neat things, too,
like facilitating the "zapping" of your Mac's PRAM, and reporting a host
of various and sundry details about your current system and it's status.
The last time I checked, the current version was 1.1.6. You can find it
at any Info-Mac mirror.
