Hi Barry -- the Get Info box is a well-kept secret. You should go through
an up the memory allocations on all your most used programs, as they
normally come set for the bare minimum. You can't take advantage of that
128 mb of RAM unless the programs' allocations are raised.
If you're using Photoshop on your Mac, you'll want to assign it a huge
chunk of memory. We keep Virtual Memory turned off, as it's not recommended
for use with Photoshop and may screw things up. Virtual Memory isn't real
RAM -- it's hard drive space that the Mac pretends is RAM.
Main thing you should do is click on the desktop, then pull down on the
Apple menu to the About this Mac window. Figure out how much memory your
system needs, then allocate the rest of it in chunks so that when all the
programs that you use at once are all booted up, you won't max out your
total RAM.
You can also use RamDoubler to increase the number of programs you keep
open at once. We've always had good luck with it, but some folks report
problems.
Also, there are some mysterious memory leakage problems that you may
sometimes experience, where you may run up on "out of memory" problems that
you know can't be true. I think I read once that this has something to do
with the browsers screwing up memory, but I never dug real far into it. If
it happens, you can clear it up by restarting.
